Great to meet you!

Greetings, I’m Dr. Lisa M. Johnson, a licensed clinical psychologist (CA & MI) with over 22 years of experience supporting children, adolescents, transitional age youth (16–26), and adults through life’s most challenging seasons. I earned my Ph.D. in Clinical Community Psychology from the University of South Carolina. I currently work with adults over the age of 18. My work specializes in trauma/post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, racial stress/racial battle fatigue, identity development, and major life transitions, within a culturally grounded, affirming approach.

My approach to therapy

My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, and culturally grounded—rooted in the belief that healing happens when you feel seen, safe, and empowered. I use evidence-based approaches like Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to help you understand patterns, build practical coping skills, and process painful experiences at a pace that feels respectful, sustainable, and healing.

What you can expect from me

In your first session, you can expect a warm, grounded space where we slow things down and focus on helping you feel safe and understood. We’ll talk about what brought you in, what you’ve already tried, and what you want therapy to help you change—then we’ll begin clarifying goals for our work together (often around relief, coping skills, and a clearer sense of direction). I’ll ask thoughtful questions about your history and current stressors, while also checking in about pace, comfort, and what feels most important to address first. You’ll leave with a clearer plan for next steps and, when helpful, a few practical tools to support you between sessions.
