Great to meet you!

Hi! I am Mary Elizabeth Johnson, M.S., LCPC (my nickname is Mary Beth) and I have over 30 years’ combined experience as a middle and high school counselor in schools, and as a licensed clinical counselor/therapist. As a licensed therapist in a high school, I provided direct service to students with severe emotional and behavioral needs. I am a past Program Manager at a psychiatric rehabilitation provide where I evaluated and provided interventions for kids who meet the requirements for psych rehab/partial hospitalization. I continued my career as a Military Family Life Counselor, working with military connected high school students as a non-medical counselor. I am licensed as an independent mental health provider and a board-certified supervisor in Maryland.

A bit about my approach to therapy

I am a solution focused therapist with plenty of cognitive and cognitive-behavioral techniques in my toolbox! I enjoy working with kids with ADHD and executive functioning difficulties, motivation problems, "attitude" problems as well as anxiety, depression, identity or other challenges.

What you can expect from our first session

I like to first learn briefly about a child's presenting issue in the child's own words, and together the client and I set some goals for what we might accomplish in the short term or in the longer term. I expect kids to feel more capable in coping pretty quickly from the work we do together. If not, it is important we find out together how to help the situation and build both skills and resiliency.
