Great to meet you!

Hi there! I'm Mel.

I'm so glad that you are beginning your journey towards wellness. I'm a therapist with over 15 years of experience treating a variety of concerns from Anxiety and Depression, to Substance Use problems. I have experience working with young adults and adults, coming from diverse and marginalized populations, including LGBTQIA+, the sex positive and kink communities, and BIPOC.

I completed my undergraduate and graduate degrees from a top 10 public HBCU, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Since graduating, I have worked in a variety of of outpatient settings, and teaching graduate level clinical counseling courses through the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and through Columbia University. Additionally, I have experience in various leadership roles, overseeing clinical programs, and program development. I am also board approved to supervise both licensed graduate professional counselors (LGPC) and licensed graduate addictions counselors (LGADC) in Maryland.

In my spare time, I'm a mom and I spend time with my family, I'm a nature and animal lover, I travel, attend music festivals, and am an avid RPG gamer.

My approach to therapy

Having spent most of my childhood outside of the United States, I offer a TCK perspective and worldview. In the counseling relationship. I provide an empowered person centered experience, meaning: you tell me what's concerning you, and we will work together to find solutions that work for you. I incorporate an integrated approach with cognitive behavioral therapy, person centered, solution focused, and mindfulness techniques. I also like to focus through a holistic lens that supports the mind, body, and spirit.

What you can expect from me

Change can be scary... Most people don't wake up one day and say: I think I'd like to change today! Usually they carry the weight of their burden for a while before seeking out support. I commend you for taking the first steps towards healing. Let's talk about what's happened and how we can get you to the version of yourself that you want to be! In the first session, we will get to know each other, and I will gather important information that will help us to develop goals together.
