Great to meet you!

Before anything else, I want you to know that you don't have to arrive with it all figured out. You can come as you are: tired, unsure, hopeful, or all of it at once. I'm Dr. Monica Thompson, a licensed clinical social worker and addictions specialist, and I've spent my career walking alongside people who've been carrying more than their share. My work and research center the lived experiences of Black women and diasporic communities, and I bring that understanding into every session. I believe your story matters, your culture is a strength, and your healing is worth the investment. In our work together, you'll find someone who listens deeply, laughs easily, and holds space for every part of you, including the parts you haven't shown anyone yet.

My approach to therapy

I see therapy as a collaboration, and you are the expert on your own life. My role is to help you uncover what's already within you and remove what's been standing in the way. My approach is trauma-informed, strengths-based, and culturally grounded, which means we'll make room for how racism, family, migration, faith, and identity shape what you're going through. I also love bringing creativity into the room. Depending on what resonates with you, that might include storytelling, metaphor, journaling, music, or reflection that helps you see your life from a new angle. Together, we'll balance gentleness with growth: honoring where you've been, naming what you need now, and building toward a life that feels like your own.

What you can expect from me

Our first session is about getting to know each other, with no pressure and no performance required. I'll ask about what's bringing you in, what's been on your heart, and what you hope will feel different in your life. You can share at your own pace, and you're always welcome to ask me questions too, about how I work, what therapy with me looks like, or anything that helps you feel more at ease. By the end, we'll have a shared sense of where to begin and a few early goals to guide us. Most of all, I hope you leave feeling heard, a little lighter, and confident that you've found a space where you can truly breathe.
