Great to meet you!

My journey into mental health care began with a deep passion for helping others navigate life’s most difficult challenges. I started my nursing career twenty five years ago in Nigeria west African where the ordeal of mental illness is more pronounced. Early in my nursing career, I witnessed the profound impact that mental health has on overall well-being and how often it is overlooked or stigmatized. These experiences inspired me to pursue advanced training as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), where I could play a more direct and meaningful role in addressing the mental and emotional needs of individuals and communities.

Throughout my clinical and academic training, I developed a strong interest in holistic, trauma-informed care and the mind-body connection. I was drawn to the complexity of psychiatric conditions and the opportunity to build long-term, therapeutic relationships with patients. I’ve since dedicated myself to providing compassionate, evidence-based care that honors each person’s unique journey, culture, and strengths.

Becoming a mental healthcare provider has not only allowed me to advocate for vulnerable populations but also continuously challenged me to grow—both professionally and personally. It’s a role I approach with humility, curiosity, and a deep respect for the resilience of the human spirit.

My approach to therapy

I approach goal setting as a collaborative and empowering process that centers on the patient's values, strengths, and readiness for change. From the start, I work to build a trusting relationship where patients feel comfortable identifying what matters most to them—whether it’s symptom relief, improved functioning, healthier relationships, or overall quality of life.

Together, we develop realistic, measurable, and achievable goals using a shared decision-making model. I often apply SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) criteria to help structure goals clearly and set a roadmap for progress. I also ensure that goals are flexible and revisited regularly, allowing room for growth, reflection, and adaptation as the patient's needs or circumstances evolve.

Throughout this process, I provide education, encouragement, and ongoing support—celebrating small successes and helping patients navigate barriers. By aligning treatment with the patient’s personal goals and motivation, I aim to foster a greater sense of ownership, engagement, and long-term resilience.

What you can expect from me

During the first session, my primary goal is to create a welcoming, safe, and nonjudgmental space where patients feel comfortable sharing their story. I take time to get to know each individual—asking about their current concerns, mental health history, medical background, lifestyle, support systems, and any previous treatment experiences. This comprehensive assessment helps me understand the full picture of what’s going on and how best to support them.

I also explain my role as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, including how I approach treatment, what services I offer (such as therapy, medication management, or both), and how we’ll work together moving forward. I encourage patients to ask questions and share any preferences, concerns, or goals they may have about care.

By the end of the session, we’ll begin identifying initial treatment goals and discuss possible next steps, whether that includes additional assessments, starting a treatment plan, or simply continuing the conversation in follow-up visits. My focus is always on building trust, setting a foundation for open communication, and ensuring the patient feels heard, informed, and supported from day one.
