I have been working with clients who have been through many forms of trauma and life stressors for the past 20 years. The majority of my training has been focused on learning how to support clients in their healing journey and helping them gain the tools to live a healthy and happy life. Attending University of South Carolina for my Masters in Social Work, followed by 11 years working at Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore City, then continued training on specific evidenced based trauma treatments has helped grow my skills in treating client with past and ongoing forms of trauma.
We all go through many changes and struggles in life, finding strength in yourself through the safety of therapy is my goal in all of my treatment sessions. I focus on meeting the client where they are at, highlighting their current strengths and supporting them to learn new skills and gain an understanding of how their experiences have impacted them. I find that combining these aspects into treatment help empower clients to reach their goals and feel better.
My approach is to be gentle and kind with clients. I like to meet them where they are when they come into treatment and support their current strengths. I feel like I walk alongside clients as they build the strength and confidence to address the difficult things that bring them into treatment. Building the rapport that allows clients to trust me and then trust themselves to handle the healing process is key.
In our first session we would go over what brings them into treatment at this time and answer any questions they have about the process. While doing this, we would engage in some small talk and I would support any feelings they are having about starting this new process. Then we would go over questions that I had in order to get to know them. We would discuss the logistics of scheduling, payment and treatment goals.
