Dr. Rita Dexter is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and healthcare leader dedicated to helping individuals and families find healing, stability, and hope. With more than a decade of experience in psychiatric and medical settings, Dr. Dexter brings a unique blend of clinical excellence, empathy, and holistic care to every patient she serves. She specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, trauma, substance use disorders, and severe mental illness, providing comprehensive care through psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and individualized treatment planning. Dr. Dexter believes that effective mental health care must address the whole person—mind, body, and environment—and she tailors each treatment plan to reflect the patient’s personal history, strengths, and goals. Dr. Dexter has served in a wide range of clinical and leadership roles, including Medical Director, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, and Charge Nurse in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and community mental health programs across Maryland and Washington, DC. Her experience in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry allows her to support patients through acute crises as well as long-term recovery. Known for her warm and approachable style, Dr. Dexter creates a safe, respectful space where patients feel heard and understood. She takes time to listen, educate, and collaborate with each individual, empowering them to take an active role in their mental health care. Dr. Dexter is deeply committed to reducing stigma around mental illness and increasing access to high-quality psychiatric care. Her mission is to help every patient move beyond survival and toward a life of balance, resilience, and emotional well-being.

What you can expect from me

Clients can expect a comprehensive, collaborative, and conversational intake evaluation. The initial session normally last about 45 minutes to an hour which is primarily focused on understanding the whole picture of your health, establishing a safe rapport, and charting a clear, personalized treatment plan
