Great to meet you!

Hi, I’m Dr. Sara E. Ratliff, a bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker and board-approved clinical supervisor with over 16 years of experience helping individuals, couples, and families thrive. I earned my Doctorate in Behavioral Health from Arizona State University and my Master’s in Social Work from the University of Southern California, where I focused on children and families. I hold unrestricted clinical licenses in Illinois, Arizona, and Maryland (LCSW & LCSW-C), which allows me to work with clients across diverse communities.

Over the years, I’ve worked in a variety of settings—from supporting people overcoming substance use and reentry challenges, to guiding children and families through international adoption programs, to providing clinical care for Active Duty service members, retirees, and their families. My experience spans family systems, relationships, stress management, trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, chronic medical conditions and personal growth.

I’m certified in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT), CBT for Insomnia, CBT for Pain, and several relationship and suicide-prevention programs. I integrate these approaches into a personalized plan that fits each client’s needs, considering emotional, social, and cultural factors.

As a native Spanish speaker and immigrant from Mexico, I understand the importance of cultural awareness in therapy. I aim to create a warm, welcoming space where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered. My goal is to help you heal from trauma, strengthen relationships, build self-worth, and achieve meaningful personal growth.

My approach to therapy

My therapeutic approach is active, collaborative, and personalized. With over a decade of clinical experience, I combine strong training, creativity, and appropriate humor to create counseling that is effective and approachable. I meet clients where they are, offering a realistic, down-to-earth process that supports growth, resilience, and lasting change.

I take a whole-person approach, exploring emotional, biological, social, and spiritual factors that influence well-being. Challenges like anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship stress, or chronic pain are rarely isolated, so we look at patterns, triggers, strengths, and environment to create practical, sustainable solutions.

My work is evidence-based and tailored to your needs. I’m an active therapist—I engage, guide, and challenge you while helping you build insight and real-life coping skills. Together, we set achievable goals, track progress, and adjust as needed.

Clients often feel empowered, understood, and more confident navigating life with clarity, resilience, and purpose.

What you can expect from me

Starting therapy is a big step, and it’s normal to feel curious, hopeful, or even nervous. My goal is to make your first session welcoming and supportive, where you feel heard and understood. This appointment lays the foundation for our work together by exploring what brought you to therapy and how different areas of your life influence your thoughts, emotions, and well-being.

We’ll complete a thorough intake conversation, discussing your mental and physical health history, relationships, family background, work or school experiences, major life events, and current challenges. We’ll also clarify your goals—whether managing anxiety, healing from trauma, improving relationships, coping with grief, or building confidence.

I’ll explain how therapy works and the approaches I use, tailoring them to your needs. Building trust is essential, so I create a warm, nonjudgmental space where you can speak openly. We’ll identify your strengths, address any immediate concerns, and review practical details.

By the end, you’ll have a clear plan and feel confident moving forward.
