Great to meet you!

I am a military veteran with over 20 years of experience in the mental health field, with a specialized focus over the past decade on men’s mental health, including court-ordered assessments and mandated treatment services. My clinical approach is grounded primarily in evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which I utilize to support clients in developing emotional regulation, coping skills, and sustainable behavioral change. In my current role, I conduct comprehensive mental health screenings, coordinate and oversee integrated care services, and provide direct clinical support within a substance use inpatient treatment setting. Additionally, I dedicate part of my practice to serving a rural Tribal Native American community through a mental health clinic, where I provide culturally responsive and community-informed care.

I also strongly advocate for men navigating systems where they are often disproportionately penalized or misunderstood, working to ensure their mental health needs are appropriately recognized and addressed within legal, correctional, and treatment environments. My professional focus includes supporting fair, trauma-informed approaches that balance accountability with rehabilitation. I have specialized experience working with individuals diagnosed with psychotic disorders and mood disorders, providing psychoeducation to clients and their families—particularly during the early stages of diagnosis—and delivering life skills training to promote stability, independence, and long-term success in community living.

My approach to therapy

My approach to therapy is grounded in a balance of structure, compassion, and practical skill-building. I work from a client-centered, trauma-informed perspective, recognizing that each person brings a unique history, challenges, and strengths. I prioritize building a strong therapeutic relationship based on trust, respect, and authenticity, as meaningful change begins with feeling safe and understood.

Clinically, I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help clients understand the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while developing skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and effective communication. My style is active and collaborative—I work alongside clients to identify patterns, challenge unhelpful thinking, and practice skills that can be applied in daily life. I also incorporate psychoeducation to help clients and families better understand diagnoses, particularly with mood and psychotic disorders.

My work has focused heavily on men’s mental health, especially within court-ordered or mandated treatment settings. I strive to create a space where clients feel heard rather than judged, while supporting accountability and advocating for fair, trauma-informed approaches in systems where men may feel overly punished or misunderstood.

I also have extensive experience in substance use and inpatient treatment, helping clients build coping skills, strengthen motivation, and establish routines that support recovery. My work in a rural Tribal Native American community has further shaped my commitment to culturally responsive care. Overall, my approach is practical, respectful, and focused on helping clients build real, lasting change.

What you can expect from me

Clients can expect their first session with me to be structured, supportive, and focused on building a clear understanding of their needs. I begin with a comprehensive diagnostic assessment, where we gather information about current concerns, symptom history, mental health and substance use history, medical factors, and relevant life experiences such as trauma, relationships, legal involvement, and cultural background. This process is collaborative and paced appropriately to ensure clients feel comfortable and not overwhelmed.

From the start, I work to create a safe, respectful, and nonjudgmental environment where clients can speak openly. I understand that many individuals—especially those involved in court-ordered or mandated services—may feel hesitant or guarded, so I take time to build trust and clarify my role. My goal is to ensure clients feel heard, understood, and treated with dignity.

During the first session, we also begin identifying initial goals and priorities for treatment. These may include reducing symptoms of depression or anxiety, improving emotional regulation, addressing substance use, stabilizing daily functioning, or developing healthier relationships. I introduce practical, evidence-based approaches such as CBT and DBT, and begin discussing how these tools can help clients build skills for managing stress, thoughts, and behaviors in real-life situations.

Clients can also expect clear direction and collaboration. Together, we develop a treatment plan that outlines goals, measurable objectives, and next steps. I emphasize skill-building, accountability, and progress, while also recognizing each client’s strengths and resilience. Overall, the first session sets the foundation for a working relationship focused on stability, growth, and meaningful, lasting change.
