Great to meet you!

Welcome

Hello, and thank you for considering me as your therapist. My name is Tarianda Ruston, and I have more than 25 years of experience working in the helping profession. I am a licensed clinical social worker in both Maryland and the District of Columbia, with a diverse background that has allowed me to support individuals and families through many of life's challenges.

Throughout my career, I have worked in child welfare, foster care and adoption, inpatient mental health, custody cases, special education, and school mental health. These experiences have provided me with a deep understanding of the unique challenges people face across different stages of life. My passion is helping individuals discover their strengths, overcome obstacles, and build the tools needed for lifelong emotional wellness.

I believe therapy is a partnership built on trust, respect, and authenticity. My role is not to tell you what to do or make decisions for you. Instead, I provide a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where you can explore your thoughts, emotions, and experiences openly. Through thoughtful questions, compassionate reflection, and evidence-based strategies, I will help you gain insight, clarify your values, and make choices that align with the life you want to create.

My approach to therapy

I use an integrative, strengths-based approach tailored to each client's individual needs. My primary therapeutic modalities include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, and strengths-based interventions. Together, we'll identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck, develop practical coping strategies, and build on the strengths you already possess. My goal is to empower you to become confident in your ability to navigate life's challenges and create lasting change.

Clients often describe me as compassionate, supportive, approachable, and easy to talk to. My counseling style is relaxed while remaining intentional and goal-oriented. I strive to create an environment where you feel accepted, heard, and encouraged without fear of judgment. I believe everyone has the capacity for growth, and I am committed to helping you recognize your resilience and build upon it.

I enjoy working with children, adolescents, adults, and families from diverse backgrounds. Whether you're experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions, relationship challenges, grief, or simply feeling overwhelmed, I would be honored to support you. I especially enjoy partnering with individuals who are ready to make meaningful changes and are looking for a compassionate guide to help them along the way.

Reaching out for therapy is a courageous first step. If you're ready to begin your journey toward healing, growth, and lasting wellness, I would be honored to walk alongside you.

What you can expect from me

Beginning therapy can feel intimidating, and my goal is to make your first session as comfortable as possible. During our initial meeting, we'll discuss what brings you to therapy, explore your current concerns, and identify your goals for treatment. I'll explain my therapeutic approach, answer any questions you have, and ensure you feel supported every step of the way. There is no pressure to share more than you're ready to—our work together will move at a pace that feels right for you.
