Great to meet you!

I am Theresa Abbah, a board-certified Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner based in Smithfield, North Carolina, with over 27 years of experience in nursing and mental health care. My professional journey has been deeply rooted in psychiatry, where I have developed a broad and comprehensive clinical skill set focused on delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.

I spent more than 15 years working as a psychiatric nurse in an inpatient state mental health facility, which provided a strong foundation in managing complex mental health conditions. I am proud to have been one of the pioneers involved in establishing Youth Behavioral Health services, helping guide its successful accreditation and commitment to maintaining high standards of care.

As a Nurse Practitioner, I have advanced my practice working in both youth and adult inpatient behavioral health settings, including roles with UNC Youth Behavioral Health Hospital in Butner and UNC Johnston Health. I specialize in diagnosing and managing a wide range of mental health disorders, conducting crisis assessments, and providing timely referrals for individuals of all ages experiencing psychiatric, substance use, neurocognitive, or developmental challenges.

In 2018, I independently developed an alternative psychotherapy-based psychosocial treatment program to support patients in crisis at UNC Wakebrook, reflecting my commitment to innovation in mental health care.

I bring a positive attitude, creativity, and a high level of dedication to my work, consistently striving to deliver evidence-based care to patients and their families. My clinical strengths include psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, crisis stabilization, maintenance treatment and leadership, all of which guide my mission to improve mental health outcomes and support individuals on their path to recovery.

My approach to therapy

My approach to providing care is patient-centered, holistic, and grounded in evidence-based practice. I focus on understanding each individual as a whole person—considering their mental, emotional, physical, and social needs—so that care is both comprehensive and meaningful.

I work collaboratively with clients, creating a safe, respectful, and nonjudgmental environment where they feel comfortable sharing their experiences. I begin with thorough assessments, including diagnostic evaluation and, when needed, crisis assessment, to fully understand each client’s condition and immediate needs. From there, I develop individualized treatment plans that may include psychotherapy, medication management, and supportive interventions tailored to their level of functioning and personal goals.

My style is calm, attentive, and compassionate, while also being structured and goal-oriented. I strive to empower clients through education about their conditions and treatment options, encouraging them to take an active role in their care. I provide short-term crisis counseling when needed and ensure appropriate referrals and continuity of care for more complex or long-term needs.

I specialize in working with individuals across the lifespan who are experiencing mental health disorders, substance-induced mood disorders, developmental disabilities. I also have a strong focus on crisis intervention, stabilization, and helping clients navigate acute mental health episodes with effective, timely support.

Ultimately, my goal is to build trust, promote resilience, and support each client in achieving stability, improved functioning, and long-term mental wellness.

What you can expect from me

The initial session is focused on getting to know the client as a whole person. I conduct a comprehensive assessment that includes mental health history, current symptoms, medical background, and any social or environmental factors that may be impacting their well-being. If needed, I also complete a clinical or crisis assessment to ensure immediate concerns are addressed appropriately.

Together, we will begin to identify key challenges, clarify goals for treatment, and discuss what the client hopes to achieve. These goals may include symptom stabilization, improved coping skills, better emotional regulation, medication management, or support through a current life stressor or crisis.

Clients can also expect clear communication about possible diagnoses, treatment options, and next steps. I take time to answer questions, provide education, and ensure clients feel informed and involved in their care plan.

By the end of the session, clients will have a better understanding of their mental health needs, an initial plan for treatment, and reassurance that they have a supportive partner in their care. My goal is for every client to leave feeling heard, respected, and hopeful about their path forward.
