Great to meet you!

Hello! My name is Dr. Trenton Owens. I am a licensed psychologist in Iowa and North Carolina. Welcome, and congratulations on the steps that you are taking to support yourself and achieve your goals. I am passionate about helping and advocating for underserved groups, particularly people of color, sexual and gender minorities, individuals from low-income backgrounds, neurodivergent individuals, the kink community, and those engaged in “non-traditional” relationship structures.

My approach to therapy

I have a compassionate approach to my work with clients. I find this to be an extremely efficient and effective way to promote healing and change. Plus, it makes therapy feel more like a cozy warm blanket than something to dread or avoid. Compassionate curiosity and keen discernment help me gain a deep and meaningful understanding of you and your experiences. This helps me tailor interventions to you and your unique set of circumstances. I utilize psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and humanistic principles as a therapeutic framework. I believe the relationship between clinician and client is an integral part of the therapeutic process, and I cultivate this with care, intentionality, and humor.

What you can expect from me

In our first session, you should expect to be seen and heard. You will be invited to ask questions and interject at any time. You can expect to provide information about who you are and how you operate, as well as share information about what support you are looking for. You will be informed about the importance of psychological safety and compassion in our space to set the groundwork for healing. You can expect to be treated with respect and given room for your thoughts, emotions, and opinions. In our first session, we will work together to set the tone for the work ahead.
