Great to meet you!
Philosophy and Approach:
I am a cognitive behavioral counselor who has learned from twenty years of counseling and teaching that human thoughts and emotions are key to self-understanding and instrumental in any motivation toward change. My role as counselor is to support a client in sorting and clarifying ideas, processing emotions and figuring out goals in order to live with integrity and peace.
I want to support client discovery of their strength in surviving and recovering from life events, the chaos of drugs, and other mental health concerns. To do these things I lead individual therapy using DBT, CBT, MI and other cognitive based techniques, and refer to psychiatry if medications might be considered. In crisis, or post-traumatic circumstances, we can build connections with local resources for more support.
Education/Training:
I earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Oregon in 1985, and have worked as a counselor in addiction, family recovery and taught addiction counseling. I took special interest in family systems and addiction, cognitive behavioral aspects of change, motivational interviewing, mindfulness and change. I am a seasoned group and individual therapist, and educator.
As a licensed therapist in Oregon, I intend to work in person, by telephone and zoom as opportunities present. My approach to counseling is one of a partnership in which the participant and I focus together to clarify and strengthen choices and personal sense of well-being.
