Great to meet you!

Hi, I’m Joe. I’ve worked in the mental health field for 26 years across substance use treatment, outpatient care, and hospital settings. I’ve supported individuals and families through crisis, transition, and long-term growth.

I work well with teens, young adults, adults, and families who are navigating stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, substance use, or major life changes. I also have extensive experience working with men who may struggle to express emotions directly and instead feel stuck in withdrawal, irritability, or self-doubt.

As a veteran, I understand the mindset and pressures that can come with military life. Across all of my work, I aim to provide a grounded, steady presence where honesty, insight, and meaningful change can take place.

My approach to therapy

My style is conversational, collaborative, and straightforward. I won’t sit silently and nod—I engage with you. I ask thoughtful questions, offer observations, and help you connect the dots between past experiences, current reactions, and future goals. I’m direct, but I’m always respectful and supportive. Therapy should feel both safe and purposeful.

I tailor therapy to the person in front of me. I use EMDR to help process painful or traumatic memories that continue to affect your present. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to identify patterns in thinking and behavior that may be fueling anxiety, depression, or self-doubt. I also draw from rational-emotive approaches to help challenge rigid beliefs, especially harsh internal narratives around failure, worth, or “not being enough.”

Beyond techniques, I focus on building insight and resilience. We look at emotional patterns, family dynamics, boundaries, communication styles, and stress responses. If you tend to withdraw, shut down, or react quickly in conflict, we explore what’s underneath those reactions. If you feel burned out or unmotivated, we examine both practical stressors and deeper identity questions.

I believe change happens when you understand yourself more clearly and begin responding differently. My role is to help you develop practical tools you can use outside of sessions—better communication skills, stronger emotional awareness, healthier boundaries, and more flexible thinking. Therapy is not just about talking; it’s about measurable progress.

What you can expect from me

The first session is about understanding your story. We’ll talk through what brought you in, what feels most urgent, and what you would like to see change. I’ll ask questions about your background, relationships, stressors, and strengths so I can get a full picture of what’s happening.

We’ll also clarify your goals. Some clients come in with very specific objectives; others simply know they can’t keep going the way they are. Both are completely fine. Together, we’ll define what progress would look like for you and outline a plan that feels realistic and focused.

If family members are involved, we can explore their perspectives and determine how they may participate in the process. I often work collaboratively with parents, partners, or support systems when it makes sense.

You can expect transparency from me. I’ll explain why we’re using certain approaches, what the structure of therapy may look like, and how we’ll measure improvement. I aim to create a space where you feel both supported and challenged. By the end of the first appointment, you should have a clearer sense of direction and a better understanding of how we’ll move forward together.
