Great to meet you!

Hey, I’m Sam. I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a Ph.D. in Medical Family Therapy, but I believe some of the most important lessons about people never came from a textbook.

Long before I knew words like systems theory, differentiation, attachment, or family dynamics, life had already taught me that people are complicated. Families can love each other deeply and still hurt each other. Survival can teach us things we eventually have to unlearn. The person everybody depends on still needs somewhere to put their stuff. And getting older doesn’t mean we stop becoming. The classroom eventually gave me language for some things life had already taught me. I’ve jokingly called myself “the therapist’s therapist” because I’m drawn to people who are often expected to have the answers. But my work is really about people—all kinds of people, across different ages, identities, relationships, families, professions, cultures, and life experiences.

I bring both clinical training and real life into the room. I believe wisdom can come from research and theory, but also from family, culture, faith, community, a grandmother who never went to college, or simply living long enough to learn some things the hard way. Degrees don’t do therapy. People do. And I want to get to know the person sitting across from me.

My approach to therapy

I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. People are too diverse, relationships are too complex, and the systems we live, love, work, and lead within matter too much for that. My job is to learn you before deciding what tools fit you.

My approach is relational, systemic, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based practice. I pay attention to your story, relationships, culture, strengths, patterns, experiences, and the systems around you. I draw from systemic, relational, narrative, cognitive behavioral, and other evidence-based approaches based on what you bring into the room and what we discover together.

I also believe the relationship between therapist and client matters. Therapy isn’t something I do to you; it’s work we do together. Sometimes that means slowing things down enough to understand what’s really happening. Sometimes we need language for something you’ve felt but haven’t been able to name. Sometimes we’re identifying patterns, learning concrete skills, considering another perspective, or tackling something you’ve been avoiding because it feels too hard.

Conflict is part of being human. We can love each other and still hurt each other. We can experience the same situation and walk away with completely different truths about what happened. My goal isn’t to make complicated things magically simple. It’s to help you develop the language, perspective, skills, and support to move through them differently. Theory gives us tools. Your life helps us decide which ones fit. Complicated doesn’t mean impossible.

What you can expect from me

I bring the training. You bring a lifetime of being you. We’ll start there. I’m not trying to diagnose your entire existence or solve your life in the first 50 minutes. I’m listening for the story underneath the story: the patterns, relationships, experiences, strengths, and systems that help us understand what’s happening now. And you should be checking me out, too. Fit matters. Ask questions. Disagree with me. Tell me when something doesn’t land. “I don’t know” is a perfectly good answer.

So, first things first: you don’t need a speech. You don’t need the “right” therapy words or your whole story figured out. You can literally start with, “Sam, I don’t even know where to begin.” We can work with that. Our first session is a conversation. I’ll ask questions, get curious, and start learning how you see the world. I want to know what brought you here, but I also want to know you beyond the problem. Who are your people? What makes you laugh? What are you carrying? What are you proud of? And what are you tired of pretending doesn’t bother you?

And yes, we might laugh. Therapy can hold grief, anger, confusion, joy, cussing, silence, humor, and the occasional, “Now Sam, I didn’t come here for you to call me out like that.” All of it can have a seat. By the end, I hope you leave thinking, “Okay. He gets enough of it for us to keep talking.”
