Great to meet you!

I'm Sheila Mary McKeon, a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 30 years of experience specializing in trauma, anxiety, and grief/loss. I hold my MA from University of Northern Colorado and am certified as a Trauma and Loss Specialist, First Responder Counselor, and Master Level ART therapist. My primary approach is Brainspotting (Levels 1-4 and with Children), combined with EMDR and neuroscience-based protocols to create lasting healing

My approach to therapy

I work with clients using a compassionate, integrative approach grounded in neuroscience and trauma-informed care. My style is warm and collaborative—I take time to understand your unique experience and create a safe, confidential environment where healing can happen.

My primary technique is Brainspotting, which allows us to access and process trauma held deep in the brain and body. I combine this with other evidence-based methods like ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy), EMDR, and somatic protocols including the Safe and Sound Protocol, Integrated Listening System, and Rest and Restore Protocol. This integrative approach helps move you out of fight/flight mode and into genuine healing.

I specialize in working with high-performing professionals who need relief from trauma, anxiety, and grief while maintaining their careers. I also have specialized training in working with children, first responders, adoptive families, and parents navigating their own trauma while raising children. My neuroscience background allows me to explain what's happening in your brain and body, which helps demystify your symptoms and gives you confidence in the healing process.

Treatment is highly personalized. We work at your pace to lessen triggers, reduce nightmares, quiet intrusive thoughts, and restore your ability to think clearly, sleep peacefully, and function optimally in all areas of your life.

What you can expect from me

In our first session, my goal is to create a comfortable, safe space where you feel heard and understood. This intake session focuses on three key areas: your past experiences, present symptoms, and future goals. We'll discuss what brings you to therapy—whether it's trauma, anxiety, grief, or overwhelming stress—and how these issues are affecting your daily life.

I'll explain how trauma affects the brain and body in simple terms, which often brings immediate relief as clients realize their symptoms make sense and are treatable. We'll discuss my approach, particularly Brainspotting and other trauma-focused techniques, as well as increasing your positive resources so you understand how we'll work together.

This first session is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and determine if we're a good fit. By the end of our meeting, you'll have a clear understanding of how we'll address your triggers, nightmares, or anxiety, and you'll leave with hope that transformation is possible.
