Great to meet you!

My name is Andrew (he/him/his), and my newly minted private practice, Roots & Respite, is centered around helping the helpers and healing the healers, focused on people in leadership and change-agent roles within healthcare, law, education, and other public service industries. I primarily serve cis women and people of AFAB experience, ages 35-75. I treat a wide variety of psychiatric presentations, but I have a particular interest in helping individuals navigate the transition through perimenopause, while also effectively managing ADHD for those who have been historically underdiagnosed and undertreated.

I’ve been in practice as a Psych NP for nine years, graduating from the MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston, MA, in 2016. I sought a nursing degree to try to change the system from the inside, but with my nearly decade’s long experience, what I’ve really learned is that modern American healthcare needs to be completely re-imagined.

In 2023, I earned the title of Certified Integrative Psychiatric Provider (CIPP), and since then I have continued my educational focus in Nutritional Psychiatry and Women’s Health. I utilize Polyvagal Theory and mindfulness-based practices in all of my clinical work, with the ongoing intention of bringing more humanity, connection, and play into healthcare.

For those into astrology, I have my Sun in Pisces, my Moon in Taurus, and my Rising in Sagittarius. I identify closely with Buddhism, cherish time outdoors regardless of season, and strive to be a blessing to strangers as often as the opportunity arises.

My approach to therapy

I wish my approach wasn’t considered so novel in today’s day in age: listen to my patients and believe what they say. The closest analogy I’ve come up with thus far is one of a trusted co-pilot: sitting side-by-side as equals, both leaning into the task at hand, patient as main flyer, me as present and tempered guidance, utilizing my controls only if we’re headed towards water or mountains, and forever believing in patient as expert as it pertains to their own lived experience.

For many years I’ve understood my job to be centered around the cultivation and creation of sanctuary, showing up with vulnerable authenticity to wherever you are in your life when we meet. I view long-term work as both a pleasure and a privilege, as it allows me to witness the various chapters of my patients’ lives, with every year that passes taking on greater depth and meaning.

I practice under an informed-consent model, using minimal meds for maximum benefit. We’ll treat initial symptoms to clear space for the deeper exploration of potential root causes. We will focus on strategies to soften the internal monologue and strengthen the mind-body connection, prioritizing pathways to increased self-trust, self-compassion, and self-respect. I can say as a perfectionist in remission, with an internal critic who used to trend quite cruel, I know it’s possible to get people to a place where they genuinely delight in their own company, and I want to help more individuals get there and stay there.

What you can expect from me

I was taught early into nursing school that the average patient is likely to forget roughly 40% of what is discussed in session, but they will forever remember how they felt. What I hope you will take away from sessions with me is a feeling of relief and ease, a peace of mind that comes with knowing I’m hearing you and consistently centering your voice in our work together.

You will get thoughtful and comprehensive assessment and treatment planning from a curious and creative lens, and an approach that centers holistic, personalized care within the framework of Integrative Psychiatry.

Perhaps a lofty goal, but my hope is to work myself out of a job, offering new knowledge that is immediately relevant and sets you on a trajectory towards thriving, subsequently improving outcomes for those who benefit from your enhanced wellness. As for the collective, I hope we all eventually begin to witness healthier systems, as we finally turn a much needed focus to caring for those who care for so many outside of themselves. Imagine how much we would all benefit if the leaders of our world found kinder ways of speaking to themselves - consider me up for the challenge one helper and healer at a time.
