Great to meet you!

Emily LeVan is a triple-board-certified nurse practitioner (Family Nurse Practitioner, Emergency Nurse Practitioner, and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner) with active licensure in Vermont, holding full prescriptive authority. She has worked in diverse clinical settings for over 14 years, including primary care, urgent care, emergency medicine, and addiction medicine.

Emily holds an undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati, post-master’s certificates from the University of Texas at Houston and Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Duke University.

She provides compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care to patients across the lifespan—children, adolescents, and adults—treating a wide range of conditions including depression, mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, and personality disorders. Her approach is patient-centered and holistic, combining medication management, psychotherapy, complementary treatments, and lifestyle interventions to support overall well-being.

Outside of her clinical work, Emily enjoys all sorts of outdoor adventures, such as hiking and running marathons and ultramarathons.

My approach to therapy

Emily embraces the diversity of Vermont’s community and welcomes individuals of all genders, races, ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientations. She believes every person deserves the opportunity to achieve their optimal health and wellness, and she is deeply committed to walking alongside her patients on that journey.

What you can expect from me

Your First Appointment: What to Expect

Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation that typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes. This is the longest appointment you will have — follow-up visits are shorter. The goal of this first visit is for me to get to know you, understand what's bringing you in, and begin developing a care plan tailored to you.

We'll talk about:

  • What's been going on and what prompted you to seek care
  • Your mental health history, including any past diagnoses or treatment
  • Your physical health, current medications, and any allergies
  • Family history of mental health conditions
  • Your life history — where you grew up, relationships, work, and support systems
  • Sleep, energy, appetite, and other symptoms affecting your daily life
  • Alcohol and substance use, asked routinely and without judgment
  • Safety — I will always ask about thoughts of self-harm or suicide as a standard part of every evaluation

What to bring:

  • A list of your current medications and doses
  • Names of any prior providers you'd like me to coordinate with
  • Insurance card and any intake paperwork completed in advance

By the end of the visit, I'll share my initial impressions, discuss possible diagnoses, and we'll talk together about next steps — which may include medication, therapy, referrals, or further evaluation. You're always an active part of that conversation.

This is a judgment-free space. There are no wrong answers, and you don't need to have everything figured out before you come in.
