Great to meet you!

Welcome! I'm John Ely - formally John N. Ely, Ph.D., LPC, informally "John" or "Doc". I hold an earned doctorate in Counseling granted by Marquette University in 1980 and have over 40 years of experience and psychotherapy. I'm essentially a general practitioner but with somewhat of a specialty in treating anxiety and trauma; I'm also comfortable with treating adolescents, couples and families and with facilitating recovery from substance abuse and addiction.

My approach to therapy

I'm probably best described as selectively eclectic--my roots are in Rational Emotive Therapy but I am also trained in and draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and both 12-Step and Rational Recovery approaches to substance use and in adjunctive use of Ericksonian hypnosis for reduction of anxiety and traumatic ruminations.

What you can expect from me

In the first session, I will be doing a full and comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment culminating in a working diagnosis, possibly leading you to ask "I thought I signed up for John-the-therapist; how did I get John-the-doc?" (It will only happen once, promise!). We will then look at what YOU want (what do you want to resolve and how can I best help you do so) and develop an initial set of goals, mode of treatment and initial treatment plan, hopefully also getting to know each other as human beings in the process.
