Great to meet you!

Most of the people who come to me are referred by current or former patients, which I think reflects the depth of trust and connection that develops in the work we do together. Although I am a psychiatrist, I prescribe medication thoughtfully and selectively. My approach is not simply to reduce symptoms, but to help people understand themselves more deeply, untangle longstanding emotional conflicts, and address the underlying issues that are keeping them stuck, unhappy, anxious, discouraged, or disconnected from the lives they want to live.

Over the course of my career, I have supervised psychiatric residents and taught extensively, receiving multiple teaching awards for my work. I genuinely love helping people make sense of painful or confusing experiences and guiding them toward lasting change. Many patients come to me after feeling disappointed by treatments that focused only on quick solutions or symptom management without really understanding them as individuals.

I work with adults facing a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, self-esteem issues, life transitions, professional stress, trauma, and problems involving meaning, motivation, or identity. I try to create an atmosphere that is thoughtful, direct, compassionate, and deeply engaged.

The vast majority of my patients tell me that the work we do together has helped them reclaim important parts of their lives — improving not only how they feel, but how they relate to themselves, the people they love, and the future they imagine for themselves.

My approach to therapy

My approach is warm, thoughtful, and deeply engaged. I seek to create an atmosphere in which people feel safe enough to speak honestly about aspects of themselves that may be painful, confusing, conflicted, or difficult to put into words. Patients often describe me as compassionate and emotionally attuned, but also capable of being direct when necessary. I believe therapy is most helpful when it combines genuine understanding with the willingness to look clearly at patterns, defenses, fears, past trauma, and relationships that may be limiting a person’s life. Since most people who see me are struggling primarily with difficult emotions, understanding and working through these feelings occupies much of my attention.

I am deeply curious about people and about how their histories, relationships, and emotional experiences shape the way they see themselves and the world around them. Rather than offering quick advice or superficial reassurance, I try to help people understand the underlying meaning of their struggles and why they may find themselves repeating painful patterns despite wanting change. I believe that insight, combined with an emotionally real therapeutic relationship, can lead to profound and lasting transformation, helping people feel more alive, connected, confident, and free in their lives.

What you can expect from me

In a first session, my primary goal is to begin developing a real understanding of who you are as a person — not simply your symptoms, but your experience, your history, your relationships, and the particular struggles that brought you to therapy. I try to create an atmosphere that is warm, thoughtful, emotionally safe, and deeply engaged, where people feel comfortable speaking openly without fear of being judged or reduced to a diagnosis.

Patients often tell me that they feel unusually understood in our early meetings. I listen carefully not only to what is being said, but also to the emotional themes, conflicts, and patterns that may be operating beneath the surface. I often ask questions or offer observations that help clarify connections that have not previously been fully understood. My overall approach is collaborative, direct, compassionate, and deeply curious about the person behind the symptoms.

The first session is also an opportunity for us to begin thinking together about what you are hoping for from treatment — whether that involves relief from anxiety or depression, improving relationships, addressing longstanding emotional patterns, navigating a life transition, or simply understanding yourself more deeply. While some people come seeking practical help with an immediate problem, many are also looking for something more lasting: a way to feel less stuck, more alive, more connected, and more fully themselves.

Although I am a psychiatrist, I prescribe medication thoughtfully and selectively when it seems genuinely useful, rather than as the automatic focus of treatment.
