Great to meet you!

I am Dr. Ryan Stevenson (he/him/his), a proud Psychologist and Social Worker who has been providing therapy for over 20 years in various settings. I enjoy working with clients from diverse backgrounds and my goal as a therapist is to provide a safe space for healing, insight, and growth. I view my role as helping support the inner wisdom and innate healing abilities of those I work with. I am client-centered and draw from a range of evidence-based and holistic approaches. I like working with clients who are comfortable working towards vulnerability and greater interpersonal intimacy as they share and take risks in the therapy space. I received my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and Masters of Social Work from the University of Utah. I work at California State University San Marcos Counseling Center after completing internship at the UC – Santa Barbara’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and post-doctoral fellowship at UC – San Diego’s CAPS.

My approach to therapy

I work collaboratively with my clients and come from a client-centered and strengths-based approach. I create a space where goals are discussed and checked in throughout treatment. I try to work with flexibility and compassion that is informed by relational, cognitive, and mindfulness approaches. I have training in evidence-based therapies for PTSD, and have had the great privilege to work on FDA research trials with cutting edge therapies for trauma. I like parts work and holistic practices that help balance the mental health and overall well-being and functioning of my clients. I want to help my clients grow and become the better versions of themselves.

What you can expect from me

I try to provide a warm space to engage with curiosity, empathy and compassion. The first session is a space to get to know my clients and explore goals, needs, and consult about the work we will do together. I will ask for clarification and explore communication styles and patterns or dynamics that have helped or hindered my client's functioning, relationships and identities in their lives.
