Great to meet you!

My name is Shanna McMullen, and I am a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with a Master of Science in Nursing from Northwestern State University of Louisiana. I work with adults and seniors, and I bring a broad, inclusive, and genuinely creative approach to mental health care.

My clinical areas span anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, OCD, ADD/ADHD, panic disorders, chronic conditions, sleep disorders, stress, relationships, and family concerns. I offer dedicated support for maternal mental health — including prenatal and postpartum experiences — and I am deeply committed to affirming, knowledgeable care for LGBTQ+ individuals, including those navigating gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender experiences, as well as men's and women's mental health needs.

One thing that sets my practice apart: I incorporate Art Therapy as one of my therapeutic approaches — using creative expression as a powerful pathway to insight, healing, and self-discovery for clients who connect with that kind of work.

Whatever brings you here, you will be met with openness, care, and the full breadth of what I have to offer.

My approach to therapy

My approach is integrative, person-centered, and grounded in the belief that healing takes many forms — and that the best care draws on more than one of them.

Art Therapy is a meaningful part of my practice for clients who benefit from engaging with their inner world through creativity rather than — or in addition to — words. Art therapy doesn't require artistic skill; it uses the process of making as a way to access emotions, process experiences, and build self-awareness in a way that can reach places traditional talk therapy sometimes cannot.

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients identify and reshape the thought patterns and behaviors driving depression, anxiety, OCD, and mood challenges. I pair this with Behavioral Therapy for targeted skill-building, and Motivational Interviewing to meet clients where they are — especially those navigating ambivalence or uncertainty about change.

For LGBTQ+ clients, I bring affirming care that acknowledges the real impact of minority stress, identity navigation, and discrimination on mental health — without requiring clients to educate me. For clients experiencing perinatal mental health challenges — including prenatal anxiety, postpartum depression, or the emotional complexity of the transition to parenthood — I bring specialized sensitivity to what can be an isolating and often underserved experience.

Throughout everything, I listen carefully and build treatment plans that are genuinely individualized.

What you can expect from me

In our first session, I want to get to know you — not just your symptoms, but your story, your goals, and what matters most to you.

We'll talk about what's brought you in, how things have been affecting your daily life, and what you're hoping our work together might help you achieve. I'll ask about your history and background, and I'll pay attention to the full context of your life — including identity, relationships, and any physical health factors that are relevant.

For clients coming in around maternal mental health, I understand how vulnerable that territory can feel — and I bring both clinical knowledge and genuine care to those conversations.

By the end of our first session, we'll have a beginning plan: what we're working toward, which approaches feel like the right fit, and what to expect going forward. Medication will be discussed openly and collaboratively where appropriate. Every step is taken together.

You came to the right place. Let's begin.
