Thomas Kauffmann

My name is Tom Kauffmann and I am a licensed clinical social worker with ten years experience. I was awarded a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Utah in 2015, where I attended classes on their campus in Salt Lake City. I also graduated from a one year licensed alcohol and drug counseling program (LADC) in 2013 at the same university prior to getting my Master's degree. I specialize in using cognitive behavioral techniques and strategies to help folks investigate how they think about things.

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), since I found this model to be both practical and safe. My goal is to provide the basic techniques and strategies of CBT to my clients through handouts and homework. My approach is client-centered, focused and tailored to each individuals' reason for meeting with me. The general course of treatment lasts from eight to twelve sessions, usually once a week, and this timeline can vary considerably depending on the complexity of achieving the outcomes the client is looking for.

My first session begins with a thorough clinical assessment of my clients' needs, and this may take two sessions to complete. I also encourage my clients to have a complete medical evaluation done because sometimes physical conditions can affect how we think or may mimic a mental health disorder. This is to ensure that I am capable of meeting my client's needs and if not, I will refer the client to a therapist who can.
