Great to meet you!

A seasoned social work professional with more than three decades of diverse clinical, medical, military, and academic experience, Frederick Stephens brings depth, compassion, and real-world expertise to both practice and teaching. He earned his Master of Social Work degree from University of California, Berkeley in 1989, establishing a foundation in advanced clinical practice and social justice–oriented service.

His early career focused on serving children and adolescents in residential treatment settings, where he developed strong skills in trauma-informed care, behavioral intervention, and family systems work. He later expanded into pediatric medical social work at Children's Hospital of Oakland, supporting children and families coping with complex medical and psychosocial challenges. His work as a medical social worker further strengthened his expertise in interdisciplinary collaboration, crisis intervention, and navigating healthcare systems.

Frederick has extensive experience working with survivors of intimate partner violence as well as individuals who have used abusive behaviors, giving him a balanced and clinically grounded understanding of family violence, accountability, and healing. He also served military communities as a Military Family Life Counselor, providing confidential, short-term, solution-focused support to service members and their families facing stress, transition, and deployment-related challenges.

Currently, he serves as a Professor of Social Work, teaching both undergraduate and graduate students. His teaching is informed by decades of frontline practice, allowing him to bridge theory and real-world application. He is deeply committed to preparing future social workers to practice ethically, think critically, and serve diverse populations with cultural humility and clinical competence.

My approach to therapy

His therapeutic approach is integrative, trauma-informed, relational, and grounded in a strong systems perspective. Drawing from extensive experience in residential treatment, medical social work, intimate partner violence, and military family support, he views individuals within the broader context of their environments, relationships, stressors, and life circumstances. He understands that behavior and emotional responses often develop as adaptations to trauma, instability, or systemic pressures, and he helps clients explore these patterns without shame while still encouraging personal responsibility and growth.

He places strong emphasis on building trust and rapport, creating a therapeutic space where clients feel heard, respected, and understood. At the same time, his work reflects a practical, solution-focused orientation that supports clients in addressing immediate concerns, improving day-to-day functioning, and developing effective coping strategies. Safety, stabilization, and emotional regulation are central components of his practice, particularly when working with individuals impacted by trauma, family conflict, or crisis. He integrates psychoeducation, skill-building, and cognitive-behavioral strategies in ways that are accessible and relevant to clients’ real-life experiences.

His experience working with both survivors of intimate partner violence and individuals who have used harmful behaviors informs a balanced approach that combines empathy with accountability. He validates clients’ experiences while also helping them recognize patterns, choices, and the impact of their behavior on others. Overall, his approach blends relationship-centered practice, trauma awareness, systems thinking, and practical intervention strategies to support meaningful and sustainable change in clients’ lives.

What you can expect from me

In a first session with me, you can expect a calm, respectful, and professional environment where you are treated as a partner in the process rather than someone being evaluated. I begin by explaining confidentiality, its limits, and what therapy may look like, so you know what to expect. You are never pressured to share everything at once; we move at a pace that feels comfortable and manageable for you.

My first priority is to listen and understand what has brought you in at this time, what feels most stressful or overwhelming, what you have already tried, and what you hope might change. I look beyond just symptoms and gently explore the broader context of your life, including relationships, family dynamics, stressors, and past experiences that may be influencing what is happening now. This often helps people begin to understand their reactions and behaviors with more compassion and less self-criticism.

Safety and stabilization come first, especially if you are feeling emotionally overwhelmed or dealing with high-stress or crisis-related concerns. We focus on practical coping strategies, emotional regulation, and safety planning when needed before moving into deeper therapeutic work. Together, we identify one or two priority concerns and realistic goals, so you leave with a clearer sense of direction rather than feeling stuck or flooded.

You can also expect a balance of empathy and gentle accountability. I validate your experiences while helping you notice patterns, choices, and areas where change is possible. Because I value helping people understand what they are going through, you will likely leave the first session with clearer language for your experiences and at least one practical strategy or next step. Overall, the first session is structured, supportive, and purposeful, setting the foundation for meaningful and lasting change.
