Great to meet you!
A seasoned social work professional with more than three decades of diverse clinical, medical, military, and academic experience, Frederick Stephens brings depth, compassion, and real-world expertise to both practice and teaching. He earned his Master of Social Work degree from University of California, Berkeley in 1989, establishing a foundation in advanced clinical practice and social justice–oriented service.
His early career focused on serving children and adolescents in residential treatment settings, where he developed strong skills in trauma-informed care, behavioral intervention, and family systems work. He later expanded into pediatric medical social work at Children's Hospital of Oakland, supporting children and families coping with complex medical and psychosocial challenges. His work as a medical social worker further strengthened his expertise in interdisciplinary collaboration, crisis intervention, and navigating healthcare systems.
Frederick has extensive experience working with survivors of intimate partner violence as well as individuals who have used abusive behaviors, giving him a balanced and clinically grounded understanding of family violence, accountability, and healing. He also served military communities as a Military Family Life Counselor, providing confidential, short-term, solution-focused support to service members and their families facing stress, transition, and deployment-related challenges.
Currently, he serves as a Professor of Social Work, teaching both undergraduate and graduate students. His teaching is informed by decades of frontline practice, allowing him to bridge theory and real-world application. He is deeply committed to preparing future social workers to practice ethically, think critically, and serve diverse populations with cultural humility and clinical competence.
