My approach to therapy

As a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner working with individuals with serious mental illness (SMI), my approach to care is patient-centered, recovery-oriented, and grounded in a holistic understanding of each individual’s needs. I focus on building a strong therapeutic alliance based on trust, empathy, and respect, recognizing that engagement is a critical component in the treatment of this population.

I provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations that incorporate biological, psychological, and social factors, allowing for individualized and evidence-based treatment planning. My care emphasizes shared decision-making, ensuring that patients are active participants in their treatment, which helps improve adherence and long-term outcomes.

I closely monitor treatment response, side effects, and overall functioning, while also addressing common challenges such as medication adherence, substance use, and social determinants of health including housing, employment, and access to care.

Collaboration is central to my practice. I work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including therapists, case managers, primary care providers, and community resources, to ensure coordinated and continuous care.

I am also committed to promoting recovery and improving quality of life by focusing not only on symptom reduction but also on functional outcomes, independence, and community integration. My goal is to support patients in achieving stability, maintaining dignity, and leading meaningful lives.

What you can expect from me

During the first session, clients can expect a welcoming, respectful, and nonjudgmental environment where they are encouraged to share their concerns at their own pace. The primary goal of this initial visit is to begin building a strong therapeutic relationship, which is an essential foundation for effective mental health care.

The session will focus on a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. This includes discussing current symptoms, past psychiatric and medical history, medications, substance use, social background, and any stressors or life challenges. Clients will also have the opportunity to talk about their personal goals, concerns, and what they hope to gain from treatment.

Time is dedicated to listening carefully and understanding each individual’s unique experiences. Clients can expect to be treated with empathy, dignity, and respect throughout the process. Establishing trust and ensuring that clients feel heard and understood is a key priority during this first meeting.

Education is also an important part of the initial session. Clients may receive information about their condition, possible diagnoses, and available treatment options, including medication management and supportive therapies. Shared decision-making is emphasized, allowing clients to actively participate in developing a treatment plan that aligns with their preferences and needs.

Additionally, practical aspects of care will be discussed, such as follow-up plans, safety considerations if needed, and coordination with other members of the care team. For individuals with serious mental illness, attention is also given to functional needs, support systems, and community resources to promote stability and long-term recovery.

Overall, the first session is an opportunity to begin a collaborative partnership focused on improving mental health, enhancing quality of life, and supporting each client’s recovery journey.
