K. Erica Hunkin, PhD, MSN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, is a dual board-certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences and a Master of Science in Marine Chemical Ecology from The University of Mississippi. Her passion for understanding the biological basis of behavior led her to pursue a PhD in Behavioral Neuroendocrinology at North Carolina State University. During her doctoral research, she focused on how hormones influence brain function and behavior, a natural extension of her lifelong curiosity about human behavior. She later transitioned into nursing, earning a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certificate from Johns Hopkins University. Erica has provided evidence-based, holistic care for children, adolescents, and adults in multiple settings, including community-based clinics, telehealth, and work with active-duty military personnel, reservists, and veterans.
Prioritizing your mental health is the foundation for a stable, fulfilling life. I know that the first step—reaching out for help—is often the hardest, so I want to acknowledge your courage in being here. I bring 30 years of experience as a board-certified psychiatrist to our work together.
When I started working in psychiatry it became my passion. I work with individuals from the age of 6 to geriatrics. I have had the pleasure to work on several inpatient crisis stability units for adult age patients 18-55 years old as well as geriatric units for patients ages 55 years and older. I have also worked in a private practice setting for the past 4 years. I have come to realize when you love what you do it no longer truly is work.
Justin McPeak is a warm, approachable, and patient-focused psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner with over 11 years of experience in the healthcare field. He holds board certifications in psychiatry, family medicine, emergency medicine, and critical care, which gives me a broad clinical perspective. While his career has spanned several specialties, he found his true passion in mental health. He is deeply motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people he serves.
I’m passionate about helping people feel more like themselves again. I understand how overwhelming it can feel when your emotions, energy, or focus are out of sync. My goal is to provide thoughtful, individualized care that brings stability and peace back into your life.
With over 20 years of nursing experience, I’ve had the privilege of supporting individuals across inpatient and outpatient settings on their path toward emotional wellness. I believe that healing is not a straight line—it’s a journey.

Headway makes it easy to find support for your mental health — from finding the right provider, to understanding costs, to scheduling with ease.
Finding psychiatrists in Lawrenceville starts with understanding the type of mental health care you want to book. Psychiatrists and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners can diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication. Therapists focus on talk therapy. Medication management may be part of care for concerns such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, or OCD. Some people start with a therapist, some start with a prescriber, and some work with both. As you compare options, look for a psychiatrist whose listed specialties, clinical focus, and appointment style match what you want support with.
In Lawrenceville and nearby areas like Dacula, Snellville, and Lilburn, local psychiatry appointment options may be more limited than in larger cities. Virtual appointments can expand your search while keeping care within your schedule. Psychiatric medication management visits are often shorter and less frequent than therapy sessions, though some psychiatrists also offer therapy. Before booking, review each psychiatrist’s bio for details on clinical focus, availability, session format, and communication style. A free phone consultation can also help you decide whether the fit is right before starting care.
Psychiatric care in Lawrenceville can be a significant expense without insurance. Using in-network insurance is one of the most reliable ways to reduce session costs and understand what you may pay before your first visit. Headway helps you search for psychiatrists who accept your insurance, see estimated out-of-pocket costs upfront, and book directly with psychiatrists who are accepting new patients. You can browse profiles, compare virtual and in-person options, and choose a psychiatrist who fits your needs, plan, and schedule.
If you're already taking psychiatric medication and considering switching providers, talk to your current prescriber before changing or stopping any medication — most psychiatric medications shouldn't be stopped abruptly. Anyone experiencing thoughts of self-harm or in acute crisis should call 988 or go to the nearest emergency department rather than wait for an outpatient appointment.
