Hello! I’m Shel (he/she/they), a white genderfluid therapist working in a systemic lens of individual therapy. I am passionate about working with LGBTQ+ and people of the global majority. I have training in CPTSD-focused mindful psychodynamic therapy, IFS and working with people who use substances. My degree is in Marriage and Family Therapy, so I bring a relational perspective to individual therapy. I use compassion, warmth, and humor to create a non-judgmental and open space for healing. I believe through healing past trauma and building a connection to one’s intuition/wise mind and community, we can withstand hardship in the path of liberation and empowerment of all people.
I have over 10 years of experience in a wide variety of clinical settings since obtaining my Master's degree and becoming a licensed clinician. I use a client centered approach that draws from my training in cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, dialectical behavioral therapy, exposure and response prevention, and a trauma-informed approach. I have worked with people struggling with addictions, a wide variety of anxiety related difficulties, ADHD, depression, and some bodily focused repetitive behaviors. I also have experience working with couples to address relationship needs.
I am a board-certified psychiatrist committed to delivering compassionate, evidence-based, and person‐centered care to individuals experiencing a wide range of mental health challenges. My training includes a general psychiatry residency in New Jersey and an advanced Addiction Psychiatry/NIDA‐T32 Research Fellowship at Columbia University in New York City, where I received specialized experience in the treatment of substance use disorders, comorbidity, and academic research.
Clients should know that I provide a supportive, non-judgmental space while also being direct and goal-oriented. I understand that many individuals come to therapy during difficult or uncertain times, and my role is to help you gain clarity, stability, and direction.
I have extensive experience working with individuals managing complex life stressors, including legal involvement, trauma, and mental health challenges. I also have a strong background in working with clients who may need additional structure, support, or guidance in navigating systems and life transitions.
My approach is collaborative—I meet you where you are while also helping you move forward with practical tools and strategies. I value honesty, consistency, and building a therapeutic relationship that feels both safe and productive.
As a board‐certified Nurse Practitioner, I provide comprehensive, evidence‐based mental health care grounded in both medical and psychiatric training. I earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice from Temple University in 2019 with a focus in Adult‐Gerontology Primary Care. After graduation, I spent five years working with military service members and veterans, which deepened my understanding of trauma, resilience, and the unique mental health needs of this community. This experience inspired me to pursue a post‐master’s certification in Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, which I completed in 2024. I now integrate psychotherapy and medication management when appropriate, using trauma‐informed, compassion‐focused, emotionally‐focused, strength‐based, and culturally sensitive approaches to support meaningful, lasting change
I’m Dr. Carly Ellman, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and sports social worker with over 15 years of experience supporting individuals, families, and athletes across a wide range of life transitions.
My therapy style is warm, honest, collaborative, and grounded in compassion. I believe you are the expert of your own life, and my role is to help you build clarity, confidence, and tools that support your wellbeing both inside and outside the therapy room.
Whether you’re navigating anxiety, burnout, life transitions, relationship challenges, sport-related stress, or a desire for deeper self-understanding, you’ll find a safe, non-judgmental place to explore and grow.
My background includes clinical practice, college teaching, and working directly with youth, parents, and coaches to strengthen mental health, resilience, and relationships through evidence-based approaches.
I’ve also earned a Sports Social Work Certificate and serve on the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee Mental Health Registry, where I work with athletes navigating performance pressure, identity, anxiety, and stress.
I have been practicing therapy for several years (licensed for almost 2) and the more I do it the more I enjoy it. I enjoy hearing people's stories and watching them change and progress in many different ways. I like to ask questions, but am not afraid to challenge something or make a joke at times. I have worked in the drug and alcohol field for several years and in that field I encountered many different mental health conditions.
