Headway makes it easy to find support for your mental health — from finding the right provider, to understanding costs, to scheduling with ease.
Finding the right psychiatrist in Virginia starts with understanding what kind of care you need. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and monitor how those medications are working over time. Psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) can also evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medication. If you're looking for help with anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, or PTSD, either provider type may be a good fit. If you're looking for talk therapy without medication, a therapist may be a better match.
Virginia has a wide range of psychiatric providers, but availability and insurance acceptance vary by region. Whether you're in Fairfax, Norfolk, Woodbridge, or Fredericksburg, it helps to narrow your search by the factors that matter most — such as a provider's specialty, whether they offer virtual appointments, and whether they accept your specific plan. Reading a provider's bio can give you a sense of their approach before you book.
Psychiatry sessions in Virginia can be expensive without insurance. Using your in-network benefits is one of the most reliable ways to reduce what you pay. On Headway, you can enter your insurance information to see estimated session costs before your first appointment, and your out-of-pocket cost may be as low as $0 per session depending on your plan. Nationally, Headway partners with over 100 insurance plans, making it easier to find a psychiatrist who fits both your clinical needs and your budget.
