I'm Jim Veltman, and I've been doing this work for over 30 years — not because it was the safe career choice, but because I believe people can genuinely heal. I'm a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) based in Grayslake, Illinois, and I work with clients across the state through telehealth. I see adults, teens, older adults, and couples dealing with depression, anxiety, grief, PTSD, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and the complicated weight of struggling relationships. My background is grounded in both psychological training and a belief that healing isn't just clinical — it's deeply human, and often spiritual. If faith is part of your life, that's welcome here. If it's not, that's completely fine too. What matters is that we do honest, real work together.
If you're feeling stretched thin—anxious, exhausted, or stuck in patterns you can't quite name—you don't have to keep pushing through it alone. I'm Risa, an LCSW with over 10 years of experience helping adults move from overwhelmed to grounded.
I work with people navigating anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma and PTSD, grief, anger, relationship strain, identity questions, and difficult life transitions. Many of my clients look high-functioning on the outside while struggling underneath—racing thoughts, disrupted sleep, burnout, or a quiet sense that something needs to change.
Over my career I've supported clients in community mental health, geriatric care, veterans' health, and corrections—settings that taught me to meet people across very different circumstances without judgment. I earned my Master's in 2012 and have practiced ever since, with particular experience supporting women and the LGBTQIA+ and transgender community around identity, relationships, and self-worth.
Whatever brought you here, my aim is for you to feel understood from our very first conversation.
I approach therapy in a collaborative and compassionate way, creating a safe space where clients can feel supported as they explore their inner world. I believe that each client is the expert of their own life, and my role is to guide, support, and provide tools to help you connect with your strengths and insights. My work is trauma-informed and integrates a variety of techniques, including internal family systems, somatic methods, inner child work, strengths-based narratives, CBT, experiential approaches, and clinical hypnosis.
I specialize in counseling individuals with addictions, eating disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and trauma. My goal as a therapist is to help patients live the life they imagine, so please feel free to come in and let me know what you're struggling with, and we will work collaboratively to figure out the best way to move toward healing. I know life can get really challenging at times, symptoms flare up, you feel lost. I'm here to listen to you and work together to help you cope and rebuild the life you want to live.
My style is eclectic and strength based. I see human nature as intrinsically good. Sigmund Freud said we are bio-social animals. I believe a great deal in listening to one’s self talk. The more positive our dialogue with ourselves is, the more positive our dialogues with others and our lives are. I’m also experienced in CBT, DBT, MI, Solution Focused, ACT, Gestalt, Interpersonal, and person-centered counseling.
My training includes lots of wonderful supervision and workshops, a three-year certificate from the Gestalt Institute of Chicago, and two one month intensives with Virginia Satir, the founder of family therapy. Virginia taught that exploring the self is like mining gold. We all have gold inside of us. That is our basic goodness. A lot of emotional suffering is the result of being detoured from that basic goodness.

Headway makes it easy to find support for your mental health — from finding the right provider, to understanding costs, to scheduling with ease.
Searching for therapists in Crystal Lake starts with knowing what kind of support fits your needs. You may want help with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, grief, trauma, or life transitions. As you compare options, look for a therapist whose listed specialties, training, and approach match what you want to focus on. Provider bios can also help you understand whether a therapist uses approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, or trauma-informed care.
In a smaller city like Crystal Lake, local in-person options may be more limited than in larger Illinois markets. Virtual therapy can expand your choices while still connecting you with a therapist licensed in Illinois. As you narrow your search, consider appointment availability, whether a therapist offers a free phone consultation, and how their profile describes their session style. Reading bios before booking can help you compare communication style, focus areas, and what to expect in a first session.
Therapy in Crystal Lake can be a significant investment without insurance. Using in-network insurance is one of the most reliable ways to reduce session costs and see an estimated price before you book. Headway helps you find therapists who match your needs and are accepting new patients, so you can review profiles, compare fit, and book directly when you’re ready. You can also enter your insurance details on Headway to confirm available coverage and see estimated costs for Crystal Lake.
