I’m Dr. Heather Cromwell, a Licensed Professional Counselor providing telehealth therapy to adults in Alaska and Oregon. I have over 10 years of experience working in behavioral health across outpatient, inpatient, and community mental health settings, including extensive work with individuals experiencing serious and persistent mental illness, anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, burnout, and emotional overwhelm.
My background includes a Ph.D. and Master’s degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, along with years of leadership and program development experience in behavioral healthcare. I bring both clinical expertise and a practical, person-centered approach to therapy.
I believe therapy works best when clients feel genuinely seen, heard, and emotionally safe. My style is warm, collaborative, direct when helpful, and grounded in authenticity. I work to create a space where clients can better understand themselves, strengthen coping skills, improve relationships, process difficult experiences, and move toward meaningful change at a pace that feels manageable and supportive.
I understand that reaching out for support can feel vulnerable, and I strive to make the process feel approachable and comfortable from the very beginning.
I strive to provide a place of safety and security for those seeking emotional and mental wellness by building meaningful relationships with my clients. I enjoy working with trauma survivors while they find a new way of living with their past. I like to look at a person from a system perspective. What system (family or otherwise) did you grow up with? What does that look like now? What changes can you make in your system to create healthier boundaries and more meaningful relationships?
You deserve to have a space where you can show up fully as yourself and learn how to work with your brain, not against it! We'll probably work really well together if you are constantly trying to understand yourself, social/relational dynamics, your needs, and how to create healthier relational patterns. I am passionate about helping therapists, queer folks, and neurodiverse folks (ADHD/Autism) with complex trauma reconnect with safety in their selves and in relationships.
I have worked in the field of social services for over 31 years. I have experience working with adult survivors of child abuse, child neglect, domestic violence, commercial exploitation, and rape. I have experience working with adults dealing with anxiety, depression, divorce, family separation, and caretaker fatigue. I also have experience working with adults dealing with significant life/career changes, and those dealing with crisis situations.

Headway makes it easier to connect with affirming therapists who understand your identity — from finding the right therapist, to understanding costs, to scheduling with ease.
Searching for LGBTQIA therapists in Portland starts with finding care that is clearly affirming of your identity, relationships, and goals. The right therapist may support concerns related to gender identity, coming out, relationship stress, family dynamics, anxiety, depression, or trauma. As you compare options, look for therapists who list affirmative therapy, WPATH training, gender-diverse experience, or direct experience with LGBTQIA+ clients. This can help you find a therapist whose background matches what you want to discuss in care.
Portland has many mental health therapists, and the number of choices can make the search harder to narrow. Location may matter if you prefer in-person care near your neighborhood, workplace, or transit route. Virtual appointments can also expand access to LGBTQIA+-affirming therapy, especially when you want a therapist with specific experience in therapy for gender identity, bisexual therapy, gay couples therapy, lesbian therapy, or LGBTQIA+ relationship support. Review therapist bios before booking to see how they describe their approach, the populations they work with, their availability, and whether they offer a free phone consultation.
Therapy in Portland can be a significant investment without insurance. Using in-network insurance is one of the most reliable ways to reduce session costs, and Headway helps you see your estimated out-of-pocket cost before you book. You can search for LGBTQIA+-affirming therapists in Portland, filter by insurance, appointment format, specialty, and availability, then review bios and book directly when you’re ready.
