I have been trained in expressive arts therapy and is a certified gestalt therapist. I utilizes the arts according to each person’s abilities to imagine and develop body awareness. Life begins when you know who you are. But the path to self-knowledge can be fraught and hard to find. “Be yourself,” “create yourself,” “find yourself”–these are some of the injunctions that might waylay any earnest seeker. When we learn to sit with the uncomfortable parts of self–the parts that make us want to crawl out of our skin–revelation can occur.
Talk therapy can be a place to learn how to be interested in ourselves and in our past. When we learn to love ourselves the way we wish to be loved, our relationships can flourish. We can deepen our genuine interest in others. When it works, psychotherapy can inspire incredible capacity and resolve to bend towards the future and embrace change

I’m a formerly harsh self-critic and PhD psychologist with 30+ years of experience. I blend Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindful Self-Compassion. If you struggle with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem or relationship problems, I’m here to help.
Through therapy, you'll learn to stop judging yourself so harshly, let go of guilt, shame and blame, and treat yourself with the same kindness you show others. I help you believe in yourself and take action, even when you’re feeling anxious.
Hi! I am Dr. Thomas Rigg and I am a licensed psychologist based in New York City. I have been passionate about helping people since childhood. I strive to provide a warm and encouraging environment for clients from varying cultural, social, and gender identities to continue their healing journey and live a fuller life. I am dedicated to providing an environment where clients of all identities can be authentically themselves and acknowledge the importance of genuine self-expression for clients, both in the therapy space and throughout their lives.
I earned my bachelor’s degrees and doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from The University of Iowa. I gained experience working in college counseling centers and community mental health centers during my program. I also worked in a women’s shelter for several years providing support and resources to victims of domestic violence. During my doctoral program I conducted research on identity development and my thesis explored the impact that a client’s comfort expressing their culture to others had on their outcomes in therapy. I completed internship at George Mason University’s counseling center and finished my postdoctoral work at a private practice in New York City working with a wide range of adult clients.
