Lexington's LGBTQIA+ community deserves providers who truly listen. Headway offers talk therapy and medication management from empowering providers across the city, with sessions you can schedule within two weeks and the support you need to thrive.
Reaching out for therapy can feel intimidating — especially if you’re afraid of being judged, misunderstood, or unsure whether therapy will actually help. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, emotionally exhausted, stuck in unhealthy patterns, or like you’re barely holding things together on the outside, you’re not alone.
My approach is warm, direct, practical, and collaborative. I help clients not only process emotions, but also understand why certain patterns keep happening and how to create meaningful, lasting change. Together, we focus on building emotional awareness, healthier coping skills, nervous system regulation, and stronger relationships.
Many of my clients struggle with anxiety, perfectionism, emotional overwhelm, relationship stress, attachment wounds, self-esteem issues, or difficulty managing intense emotions. I work to create a space where clients feel safe, supported, understood, and empowered to move forward with greater clarity and confidence.
If any of this resonates with you, I’d be honored to support you in your healing process.
I became a therapist because I believe our struggles deserve to be understood, not just fixed. Too often, people come to therapy feeling like a problem to be solved or a checklist to work through, and that's exactly what I want to push back against. My goal is to help you feel more human, not more clinical.
I earned my Master's in Social Work from Northern Kentucky University in 2014 and hold a certificate in ADHD treatment. I work with adults navigating ADHD, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorder, and I bring both professional training and personal familiarity to these areas. I know this stuff isn't abstract. It shows up in real life, in real ways, every day.
I am a licensed clinical social worker who graduated from Rutgers University with a Masters in Social Work. Throughout my 12+ year career I have worked with a variety of people and have really found my skill set to be working with people dealing with OCD, depression, and anxiety. I like to incorporate elements of CBT, DBT, and mindfulness into my work.
Having over 25 years of hands on experience with a variety of clients, I am comfortable working with just about anyone who is ready and willing to look at new perspectives. During our time together, you will feel safe, understood, and empowered.
As an an expert in relationships and sexual intimacy, as well as life's harder moments, when things feel bleak or it is hard to trust that things will work out again, I am here for you. I am empathic, patient, thoughtful, challenging, and an out of the box thinker offering a steady hand to steer you toward your highest path. I am driven by your goals and act as an accountability partner and friendly ally on your journey to seek pleasure, change, and empowerment. I believe there is opportunity in crisis (big and small) and that you are here because you know what it is you need. Let me help you recover your true SELF.
Hi, I’m a therapist who believes healing doesn’t have to feel stiff, awkward, or like you’re sitting in a room being judged by someone holding a clipboard.
My style is warm, down-to-earth, and often sprinkled with humor—because sometimes we need to laugh so we don’t fall apart, and sometimes we just need to laugh while we’re putting ourselves back together.
I specialize in working with people who don’t fit neatly into one diagnostic box—folks with dual diagnoses, complex histories, depression that doesn’t budge easily, and the “I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t help” crowd. If you’ve been called “a lot,” “too much,” or “hard to treat,” you’re exactly my kind of person.
What therapy with me feels like:
Safe, supportive, and human—not clinical and cold
A place where you can be messy, honest, sarcastic, or quiet
Collaborative, with plenty of gentle challenge when you need it
Rooted in evidence-based strategies, but delivered in a way that feels real and doable
Hello, I’m Dr. Rebecca Pender Baum, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Registered Play Therapist with over 18 years of experience supporting individuals, couples, and families across the lifespan. I work with clients navigating everyday stress, anxiety, unexpected life transitions, and both current and past traumatic experiences. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or simply seeking greater clarity and balance, therapy can be a place to slow down, feel understood, and move forward with intention.

Headway makes it easier to connect with affirming therapists who understand your identity — from finding the right therapist, to understanding costs, to scheduling with ease.
Finding an LGBTQIA+-affirming therapist in Lexington starts with identifying what kind of care fits your situation. You may be looking for a provider who specializes in identity exploration, anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, or experiences specific to the LGBTQIA+ community — like navigating coming out, minority stress, or family dynamics. Therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists each offer different types of care, so understanding whether you need talk therapy, medication management, or both can help narrow your search.
When choosing a provider, look for someone who is licensed in Kentucky and has specific experience with LGBTQIA+ clients. Reading a provider's bio can give you a sense of their approach, background, and whether they create a space where you can be open about your identity and experiences. A free introductory phone call is another way to gauge fit before committing to a full session.
Therapy in Lexington can be expensive without insurance, but affordable options exist when you use in-network coverage. On Headway, you can enter your insurance details to see estimated session costs upfront, and your out-of-pocket expense may be as low as $0 per visit. Nationally, Headway partners with over 100 insurance plans, making it easier to find an LGBTQIA+-affirming provider who is both the right clinical fit and covered by your plan.
