I provide services throughout the state of Hawai’i, all islands are welcomed! I know finding a therapist can be a daunting task. I hope this profile will help you take the first step in prioritizing your emotional wellbeing to live a more meaningful life. The most important aspect of therapy is the relationship between you and I. My approach to therapy is focused on the unique needs of the individual and/or the family from a person-centered/ humanistic lens. My therapeutic foundation is centered on my cultural background, and built upon the platform of Lōkahi.
I'm someone who values change, growth, and new experiences, which is what brought me from Connecticut to Hawaii several years ago. I earned my Master of Social Work from the University of Connecticut (UCONN) in 2016, building upon a Bachelor of Science in Social Work with a Psychology minor. My career has included working at Yale New Haven Hospital in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and with individuals living with severe mental illness across geriatric, adolescent, and adult psychiatric units. I have also provided hospice support for individuals and families navigating palliative care and end-of-life concerns. Currently, I work as an outpatient Clinician supporting mental health for Veterans.
I became a therapist because I have a genuine desire to help people. I have appreciated having the opportunity to help individuals move toward relief, gain clarity, recognize their strengths and navigate life transitions with greater confidence and support.
Starting therapy can feel vulnerable, and finding the right therapist matters. My goal is to create a safe and supportive space where you feel heard, respected, and understood.
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with experience in outpatient behavioral health and healthcare leadership in Hawaiʻi. Bruised Not Broken Therapy was born out of the lack of Afrocentric based psychotherapy that allowed people of color to embrace their journey of life through the context of color. HIV, substance abuse, mental health and the denial of the experience of being a person of color continues to plague communities of color, as we still have yet to talk about these experiences.
Welcome — I'm so glad you're here. I'm David Guo, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) serving clients throughout Honolulu and across all of Hawaii via secure telehealth. Whether you're in Downtown Honolulu or on Maui, Molokai, Kauai, or the Big Island, I'm here to support you. I believe real healing starts with real connection. That means taking time to truly know you — your story, your life, your goals — so you never feel like just a chart. You won't feel rushed here. I'm available weekdays (evenings too) and weekends.
I am open, approachable, and committed to listening carefully to your experiences without judgment. I believe that each person carries a unique story, and my goal is to provide a supportive space where you feel heard, understood, and encouraged as you navigate life’s challenges and opportunities for growth. Together, we can explore what is most important to you and work toward creating a life that feels meaningful, authentic, and aligned with your values.
My background includes earning a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, along with a lifelong appreciation for personal growth, nature, and the healing power of connection. Growing up learning to surf fostered a deep respect for the ocean and the lessons it offers about resilience, balance, and adapting to life's changing conditions. These experiences have shaped my belief in the importance of honoring each individual’s journey and recognizing that growth often comes through both challenge and reflection.

Searching for therapists in Honolulu starts with understanding what kind of support fits your needs. Therapists may focus on concerns like anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, grief, life transitions, or trauma. As you compare Honolulu therapists, look for someone whose listed specialties, training, and approach match what you want to address. Provider bios can help you understand whether a therapist uses approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, or trauma-informed care, and what sessions may feel like.
In Honolulu, location and format can play a major role in finding a therapist who fits your routine. You may prefer an office near Waikiki, Manoa, downtown Honolulu, or another part of Oahu, or you may want the flexibility of virtual therapy from home. It can also help to compare appointment availability, whether a therapist is accepting new clients, and whether they offer a free phone consultation before the first session. Reading each therapist’s profile gives you a clearer sense of their communication style, session structure, and experience with the concerns you want to address.
Therapy in Honolulu can be a significant investment without insurance. Using in-network insurance is one of the most reliable ways to reduce session costs and understand what you may pay before you book. Headway helps you search for licensed therapists who accept a wide range of insurance plans, see estimated out-of-pocket costs upfront, and book directly when you’re ready. This makes it easier to compare therapists in Honolulu, review bios, and find care that matches your needs, schedule, and coverage.
