Anxiety and perfectionism have turned your mind into a battleground. Your inner critic nitpicks every interaction, leaving you exhausted by thoughts of “Damnit, why can’t I just be better!” Painful memories get louder, no matter how hard you try to ignore them. Daily invalidations of your Latina, queer, or immigrant identity sting, and you feel isolated as you keep your suffering to yourself. You’ve tried everything: doom scrolling, drinking, and self-help books, but nothing has worked. You're left feeling hopeless and weighed down.
I’m a licensed therapist trained in somatic psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. I work with individuals, couples, and men, supporting clients with anxiety (including social anxiety), depression, ADHD, relationship challenges, trauma, and life transitions. I also help people navigating loneliness, work-related stress, and cultural or identity-related experiences, including multiracial relationships. My goal is to help people better understand themselves, their patterns, and how they relate to others. I tend to be warm, down-to-earth, and collaborative, while also being direct when it’s helpful.
I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Sonoma County with six years of clinical experience working with young people and families. I've worked across a range of settings including intensive residential treatment, county behavioral health, and outpatient care, and I bring that breadth of experience into my private practice. I specialize in working with preteens, teens, young adults, and families navigating anxiety, trauma, identity, family conflict, and life transitions. I also work with couples on a private pay basis.
Healing happens in relationships, and I take a collaborative, strengths-based approach, focusing on the whole family system. When one person struggles, it affects everyone. My approach is collaborative, relational, and strengths-based, prioritizing a safe space, unconditional positive regard, and a strong therapeutic alliance. I work with toddlers, children, adolescents, adults, parents, couples, and families. I help families navigate emotional and behavioral challenges and individuals seeking growth, connection, and healing.
I treat ADHD, OCD, Anxiety & Depression, Emotional Dysregulation & Adjustment Issues. I offer Child-Centered Play Therapy, Filial Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Therapy for Goal-Oriented Change, Parent Support, & Family Therapy.
Every child deserves to feel seen, every parent deserves support, and every person deserves a space of hope and growth. Let’s work together to create lasting change.
I have a deep commitment to seeing people flourish in relationship to themselves, and to others. For many of us, we have some sense of what makes relationships great and what makes them terrible. Knowing and experiencing what makes great relationships stronger, and what turns terrible relationships around, is where I can work alongside you. As someone who has been stepped in Attachment science, I love allowing for people to make more coherent sense of their internal world, to build or restore bonds with others.
Hola, Soy Christina Zapata, mi pronombre es ella. Hello, I'm Christina Zapata, my pronouns are she and her. I am bilingual (English/Spanish), bi-and pan cultural. My professional training is in clinical social work. I started out in depth-oriented psychotherapy in 2012, moved to family work with foster and adoptive families in the middle part of my career and have returned to psychodynamic, systems-oriented psychotherapy with individuals and families since 2017. I have experience working with Transgender individuals, those in current or former relationships where intimate partner violence is present, foster and adopted youth, and Spanish speaking political and economic refugees and immigrants. I am trained in EMDR. I have undertaken a three year grief training to help people stay connected to, sit with and move through pain. More recently, I am adding to my practice work around supporting individuals who are experiencing stress and confusion in their workplace.
I'm an open minded individual and welcome any topics in treatment

Headway makes it easy to find support for your mental health — from finding the right provider, to understanding costs, to scheduling with ease.
Searching for therapists in San Rafael starts with knowing what kind of support you want. Therapists may focus on concerns like anxiety, depression, grief, relationship challenges, trauma, or life transitions. As you compare options, look for a therapist whose listed specialties, training, and approach match your needs. Provider bios can also show whether a therapist uses approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, or acceptance and commitment therapy.
San Rafael has a smaller local therapist market than nearby larger cities, so virtual therapy can expand your options while keeping care close to home. You may prefer an in-person office near downtown San Rafael, Terra Linda, or North San Rafael, or a virtual appointment that fits your schedule. To narrow your search, consider appointment times, whether the therapist is accepting new patients, and whether a free phone consultation is offered. Reading profiles before booking can help you understand each therapist’s communication style and what a first session may look like.
Therapy in San Rafael can be expensive without insurance, and using in-network coverage is one of the most reliable ways to reduce session costs. Headway helps you find therapists who accept a wide range of insurance plans, verify your benefits, and see your estimated out-of-pocket cost before you book. You can compare therapists, review bios, and book directly when you’re ready.
