I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing trauma-informed therapy for adults navigating anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, emotional dysregulation, life transitions, and patterns that may no longer be serving them. My professional background includes work in outpatient behavioral health settings, where I’ve worked with clients experiencing complex trauma, attachment wounds, and longstanding relational patterns that may contribute to various mental health concerns. Clients often come to therapy feeling stuck in cycles of people-pleasing, emotional overwhelm, self-criticism, unhealthy relationship dynamics, or difficulty understanding why they react the way they do. Together, we work to identify where these patterns originate and develop healthier, more intentional ways of responding.
My passion is working with people and helping them to be the best they can be. I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina and a Licensed Professional Counselor in South Carolina with 24+ years of therapeutic experience. My experience started in Mental Health Clinics, but I have been working in private practice for over 15 years. I help people with a variety of concerns to include stress, anxiety, coping with grief and loss, parenting issues, motivation, self-esteem, and confidence.
I have been working in the mental health field for 21 years, 11 as a therapist. I studied at Fordham University for my Master degree and Mercy University for my bachelors degree. I enjoy using all modalities of treatment and have a certificate in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). I've also done trauma focused studies and work as well. In my free time I love to be outside hiking with my two dogs. I have set a goal of hiking 365 miles for the year and 2025 was the 1st year we were able to accomplish that goal. I believe if your goal is important you keep trying until you reach it!
I am a dedicated Family / Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner committed to supporting my clients on their mental health journey. My approach is both warm and compassionate, creating a safe space where you feel heard, understood, and empowered. I believe in being direct and honest while maintaining a foundation of empathy and respect.
With a strong focus on holistic and personalized care, I work collaboratively with clients to develop effective treatment plans that address your unique needs, challenges, and goals. My strength lies in balancing a straightforward communication style with genuine empathy, ensuring you feel supported and motivated throughout your mental health journey.
Whether you're facing anxiety, depression, mood disorders, or life transitions, I am here to help guide you toward wellness with kindness, clarity, and understanding.
Hi, I'm Mel Joy, a healer with 25+ years of experience witnessing how resilient people can be. We all experience ebbs & flows of transitions and struggles, while constantly evolving. Life can be both beautiful & messy, and I'm humbled and honored to help you sort through it in individual and/or group therapy. Our minds & emotions uniquely shape our perception of reality. No two people have the same experience, and there is no such thing as a "one size fits all" treatment modality. No matter how different we may be, one thing we all share is the capacity for joy & pain, and everything in between.
Welcome, and thank you for being here. Reaching out isn’t always easy, and I’m glad you’ve taken this step. I’m a licensed social worker with over eight years of experience helping individuals navigate anxiety, depression, trauma, and chronic medical conditions. My goal is to create a space where you feel heard, supported, and comfortable working at your own pace.

Headway makes it easy to find support for your mental health — from finding the right provider, to understanding costs, to scheduling with ease.
Finding the right therapist in Newburgh starts with identifying what kind of support you're looking for. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, grief, or trauma, look for a licensed provider who has experience with your specific concerns. Common license types include LMHC, LCSW, LMFT, and psychologist. Reading a provider's bio can help you understand their approach and decide if they're a good match before booking.
With many therapists practicing across Newburgh, New Windsor, and the broader Orange County area, narrowing your options can take time. Consider what matters most to you — whether that's a provider who offers a specific therapy style like CBT or DBT, someone available for virtual sessions, or a therapist located near your neighborhood. A free phone consultation can also help you gauge fit before committing to a full session.
Therapy in the Hudson Valley can be expensive without coverage, but using in-network insurance is one of the most reliable ways to reduce your out-of-pocket costs. On Headway, you can enter your insurance details to see estimated session costs before you book. Nationally, Headway partners with over 100 insurance plans, and many patients pay as low as $0 per visit. Confirming your coverage upfront helps you focus on finding the right provider rather than worrying about cost.
